Why Tony Jefferson Won’t Stop Until This Ravens Veteran Joins the Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers have taken steps to address several roster needs this offseason, despite not making any high-profile signings. Whether or not their approach is successful will depend on how well their recent additions perform. With available salary cap space, the team is expected to make further moves after assessing needs following the 2025 NFL Draft.

General manager Joe Hortiz may also consider input from the locker room when making decisions. Recently re-signed veteran safety Tony Jefferson has already expressed his intention to recruit defensive lineman Calais Campbell to the Chargers. Jefferson and Campbell previously played together with the Baltimore Ravens, creating a personal connection that could help persuade Campbell to join the team. Additionally, Campbell’s time in Baltimore from 2020 to 2022 links him to members of the current Chargers’ front office.

Despite his age, Campbell remains a productive player. He will be 39 years old when the 2025 season begins but has recorded at least five sacks in each of the past three seasons. Throughout his career, Campbell has earned six Pro Bowl selections between 2014 and 2020, along with one First-Team All-Pro and two Second-Team All-Pro honors. During that period, he was considered one of the most dominant defensive linemen in the league and continues to perform at a high level.

Adding Campbell to the Chargers’ defense would provide versatility and experience. He is capable of playing multiple positions along the defensive line, strengthening the team’s interior defense and offering a reliable run-stopping presence. Despite his age, Campbell remains effective as a pass rusher. While he may not play every down, his ability to make an impact in key situations makes him an ideal rotational player who could significantly contribute to the team’s defensive efforts.

Jefferson’s desire to recruit Campbell is promising for Chargers fans. Although Jefferson alone cannot guarantee Campbell’s arrival, his outreach could initiate discussions that lead to the veteran joining the team. For the Chargers, signing a player of Campbell’s caliber on a short-term deal would be a low-risk, high-reward move.

Bringing in one of the most accomplished defensive players still active in the NFL would enhance the Chargers’ defense both on and off the field. Campbell’s leadership, versatility, and proven track record make him a valuable addition. If the Chargers follow through and successfully sign him, he could play a crucial role in strengthening their defensive front for the 2025 season.
