West Ham-owned Callum Marshall reveals Huddersfield Town target as Wrexham showdown looms

After recently returning to his goal-scoring ways, Huddersfield Town forward Callum Marshall hopes to keep making a “difference” for his team in attack.

The Terriers defeated Stevenage 2-1 on Saturday, and the West Ham United loanee scored his ninth goal of the season.

After going 12 games without a goal, the 20-year-old scored his second goal in as many outings last Tuesday against Wigan Athletic.

Marshall has featured regularly for Town this term, making 36 appearances in all competitions to date.

He told HTTV: “When you come on loan, you want to be in an environment where you’re wanted, where you’re one of hopefully the main players that can make a difference in a game.

“Especially as an attacker, you want to be the one getting goals and assists, and making big differences for the team.

“That’s what every youngster looks for when they come on loan, so I think it’s going well, and hopefully I can get more before the end of the season.”

Marshall put Town ahead just three minutes into Saturday’s contest at the Lamex Stadium. Brandon Hanlan levelled for the hosts in the 11th minute, before Nigel Lonwijk netted what proved to be the winner 24 minutes in.

“It’s obviously great to get a goal in the first couple of minutes, and that was a big thing for us, because I don’t think we’ve started games very well, so it was great to put us on the front foot,” Marshall reflected.

“I was hoping that would make us in control of the game, because we know Stevenage are a tough opponent, and I was just hoping that would take the edge off, and just make us a bit more calm on the ball.

“I know myself that if I get chances I’ll score, so I’m just happy that I was getting chances, because then I knew I was getting in the right areas, and I know over time, most times than that, I’d have scored more than one.

The keeper’s pulled off a good save, and then I’ve tried to stick one through his legs that’s just missed the post, which I should’ve scored.

I’m just happy that I’ve scored again, and hopefully going into Tuesday, we can move on from it and hopefully get another one.”

The Terriers got back to winning ways on Saturday, after previously registering consecutive defeats to Peterborough United and Wigan Athletic.

The victory leaves Town fifth in the League One, on 58 points from 34 matches played, heading into today’s crucial encounter at home to third-placed Wrexham.

“I don’t think we’ve ever thrown the towel in as such,” Marshall said on his side’s recent losses. “The past couple of games, I think we’ve just been a bit nervy on the ball, and I don’t know if it’s a lack of confidence or belief, but I feel like today, it was a battle, and we knew what way they were going to make the game.

They were going to make the game physical, long balls, and we knew we had to deal with that, so I think we dealt with it very well, and hopefully we can take it into Tuesday and do more of the same hopefully.

“I don’t think at any point you could’ve questioned the lads’ character, or their willingness to run, which we’ve shown again today. I think even when we weren’t playing well, our GPS numbers and stuff were through the roof.

“It wasn’t for the want of trying, it was just more things weren’t clicking, maybe a bit of lack of confidence, but I think we’ve shown today that we’re still a team unit, and we’re still playing together and we still believe we can push to do well this season, and hopefully get promoted by the end of the season.”
