The Ultimate Twist: Sean Miller Beat Texas—Now He’s Their New Head Coach

Sean Miller, formerly the head coach of Xavier, has been hired as the new head coach of the Texas Longhorns men’s basketball team. This announcement came just hours after Texas fired their previous coach, Rodney Terry. Interestingly, Miller had recently led Xavier to a victory over Texas in the NCAA Tournament’s First Four before accepting the Longhorns’ coaching position.

Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte did not release an official statement regarding Terry’s dismissal until after news of Miller’s hiring had already surfaced through local media reports. Under Terry’s leadership, the Longhorns achieved a 62-37 overall record, highlighted by a trip to the 2023 Elite Eight and the 2024 Round of 32. However, this season ended in disappointment with an early exit in the First Four.

Miller brings a wealth of experience to the Longhorns. His head coaching career began with Xavier in 2004. In 2009, he moved to lead the Arizona Wildcats, where he spent 12 seasons before returning to Xavier in 2022. Across his coaching career, Miller holds an impressive 487-196 overall record. During his latest stint at Xavier, he guided the team to a 65-40 record over three seasons, including an appearance in the Sweet 16 in 2023 and the Round of 64 in 2024. This year, the Musketeers also faced a First Round exit from the NIT Tournament.

After their First Four win against Texas, Xavier’s tournament run ended with a 13-point loss to the Illinois Fighting Illini in the Round of 64. The Musketeers concluded the season with a 22-12 record, finishing fourth in the Big East Conference.

Miller’s move to Texas marks a significant shift for the Longhorns as they aim to rebuild following an underwhelming postseason. With his extensive coaching background and track record of success, Miller is expected to bring renewed energy and competitiveness to the program.
