As the NFL draft approaches, the rumor mill is in full swing. Teams strategically release information to mislead competitors, making it difficult to separate truth from speculation. The New York Jets are no exception, and recent reports suggest they may be targeting a controversial draft prospect—Penn State tight end Tyler Warren.
According to Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda, the Jets are reportedly “infatuated” with Warren and plan to hold multiple meetings with him. Pauline even projected Warren to the Jets with the seventh overall pick, despite admitting his reluctance to make such a selection. This connection between Warren and the Jets has gained traction in recent weeks, with indications that their interest is more than mere conjecture.
Warren’s journey to NFL stardom began as a high school quarterback before transitioning to tight end at Penn State. For his first three years, he played a limited role as a backup, recording 34 catches for 422 yards and seven touchdowns during the 2023 season. However, his breakout came in 2024 when he became one of the most dynamic offensive players in college football. That year, Warren amassed 104 receptions for 1,233 yards and eight touchdowns, earning the prestigious John Mackey Award, which honors the nation’s top tight end. This impressive season vaulted him into the conversation as a potential top-15 draft pick.
The Jets’ need for a tight end became more pressing after their starting tight end, Tyler Conklin, signed with the Los Angeles Chargers. Although the team added former Charger Stone Smartt in free agency, his modest career total of 31 catches suggests he is not viewed as a long-term solution. Other options on the roster include former third-round pick Jeremy Ruckert, as well as Zack Kuntz and Neal Johnson, who were signed to futures contracts in January.
Given their current tight end situation, the Jets’ reported interest in Warren is understandable. His unique combination of size, athleticism, and versatility could significantly enhance their offense. Warren’s ability to stretch the field and create mismatches, coupled with his contributions as both a receiver and blocker, could provide the Jets with a much-needed playmaker.
Despite the apparent interest, questions remain about whether the Jets would use their No. 7 overall pick on a tight end—particularly in a draft class considered to be deep and talented. This uncertainty has sparked debate among fans, especially after the Jets bypassed highly touted tight end Brock Bowers in last year’s draft.
Whether the Jets’ fascination with Warren is genuine or part of a pre-draft smokescreen remains unclear. As the draft draws closer, speculation will continue, but the truth will only be revealed on draft night.
