Tennessee Women’s Basketball Makes History—The Only Team to Never Miss an NCAA Tournament

Tennessee’s women’s basketball team has extended its remarkable NCAA Tournament streak, maintaining its place in all 43 editions of the competition. The Lady Vols have a long and successful history in the tournament, having played the most games of any team with a total of 165. They also hold the second-highest number of tournament victories, winning 131 games over the years.

As they prepare for their latest appearance, Tennessee aims to secure its 132nd NCAA Tournament victory on Friday when they face the University of South Florida (USF). The Lady Vols enter the tournament as the No. 5 seed in the Birmingham 3 Regional and will go up against 12th-seeded USF, which holds a 23-10 record. The first- and second-round matchups for Tennessee will take place in Columbus, Ohio, at the Schottenstein Center. Their opening game is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ESPN.

This season marks a new chapter for Tennessee under the leadership of first-year head coach Kim Caldwell. The team has compiled a 22-9 overall record heading into the tournament, with an 8-8 mark in SEC play. The Lady Vols also made it to the second round of the conference tournament. Over the course of the season, Tennessee faced 16 teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament, managing an even 8-8 record in those matchups.

The Lady Vols are part of a strong SEC presence in this year’s NCAA Women’s Tournament. They are one of nine teams from the conference to earn a spot, alongside LSU, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, Kentucky, and Mississippi State.
