Sudden Blow to the D-Backs: Why A.J. Puk’s Injury Could Trigger a Season Spiral

The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed closer A.J. Puk on the 15-day injured list due to inflammation in his left elbow. The 29-year-old left-hander, who has successfully converted all four save opportunities this season, holds a 3.38 ERA over eight appearances. Acquired from the Miami Marlins last season, Puk has a career 3.53 ERA and 26 saves in 212 games across stints with the Oakland Athletics, Marlins, and Diamondbacks.

In a series of roster moves on Saturday, Arizona also optioned right-hander Bryce Jarvis and left-hander Joe Mantiply to Triple-A Reno. Jarvis, 27, struggled with a 7.36 ERA across six relief outings this season. Mantiply, 34, posted a 15.95 ERA over eight appearances, a significant drop from his 3.92 ERA in a career-high 75 games last season.

To fill the vacancies, the Diamondbacks recalled right-hander Drey Jameson from Reno. Jameson, 27, owns a 2.63 ERA over 19 career appearances, including seven starts, though he hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2023.

The team also added right-handers J.P. Feyereisen and Juan Morillo to the active roster. Feyereisen, 32, will make his debut with Arizona after recording a 2.95 ERA over parts of four seasons in the majors with other clubs. Morillo, 26, is set to make his first major league appearance after spending eight seasons in the minor leagues.

To make room on the 40-man roster for the new additions, infielder Grae Kessinger was designated for assignment. These changes come as the Diamondbacks aim to adjust their bullpen amid injuries and early-season struggles.
