Strider Unleashed: Braves Ace Makes Shocking Comeback—Will He Silence the Blue Jays?

The Atlanta Braves have reinstated right-handed pitcher Spencer Strider from the 15-day injured list ahead of their Wednesday matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays. In a corresponding move, the team optioned pitcher Zach Thompson to Triple-A Gwinnett. Thompson has pitched three innings this season with three strikeouts.

Strider returns to the rotation after undergoing surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, which sidelined him after just two starts in the 2024 season. He made three rehab starts, including an impressive outing for Triple-A Gwinnett on April 10, where he struck out 13 batters over 5.1 innings. Across all three rehab appearances, he totaled 27 strikeouts in 13.2 innings.

The 26-year-old previously led MLB with 483 strikeouts between 2022 and 2023, earning a 3.36 ERA in 318.1 innings. He finished second in the 2022 NL Rookie of the Year voting and placed fourth in the 2023 NL Cy Young voting.

Atlanta’s current starting rotation features Strider, Chris Sale, Spencer Schwellenbach, Bryce Elder, and Grant Holmes. AJ Smith-Shawver was recently sent to Triple-A to make room for Michael Petersen, who was temporarily called up to support the bullpen. Petersen has since been optioned following the return of left-hander Aaron Bummer from the bereavement list.

Smith-Shawver has posted a 4.61 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 13.2 innings in 2025 and is expected to return later in the season. Meanwhile, Reynaldo López underwent shoulder surgery on April 8 and won’t resume throwing until July. Manager Brian Snitker remains hopeful López can pitch again before the year ends.
