Boston Red Sox left-hander Garrett Crochet has made an immediate impact after signing a six-year, $170 million contract extension. The 25-year-old boasts a 2-1 record, a 1.38 ERA, and a 0.88 WHIP. He’s set to face his former team, the Chicago White Sox, on Saturday, who traded him to Boston in the offseason for four prospects.
Despite his strong numbers, Crochet feels he hasn’t hit his stride yet. “I don’t feel like I am myself right now,” he said after his last outing, citing early-season conditions. In that start against the White Sox, he carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning before Chase Meidroth, one of the prospects traded for him, broke it up with a single. Crochet finished with 11 strikeouts, allowing just one run on one hit in Boston’s 3-1 win, helping the Red Sox avoid a sweep.
Saturday’s game will mark Crochet’s second time facing Chicago. The White Sox have struggled, dropping five straight and falling to 0-7 on the road, having been outscored 36-8 during their losing streak.
Chicago’s starter will again be Shane Smith, who pitched well in the previous matchup, holding Boston to two runs over six innings. Smith, a Massachusetts native, will make his second career appearance against the Red Sox.
Boston took the opener of the four-game series Friday with a 10-3 win, powered by Trevor Story’s two three-run home runs. Story credited the team’s momentum and timely hitting. Chicago’s Martin Perez exited early due to forearm soreness, and his status remains uncertain. Meanwhile, catcher Edgar Quero recorded his first major league hit—a ninth-inning double—after being called up from Triple-A.
