Red Sox Silence White Sox as Crochet Unleashes 11-Strikeout Revenge — Here’s Why It Matters Now

Garrett Crochet delivered a dominant performance against his former team, striking out 11 batters over 7 1/3 innings as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Chicago White Sox 3-1 on Sunday, avoiding a series sweep.

Trevor Story led the Red Sox offense, hitting a two-run double and a solo home run. Boston snapped a rough stretch, having lost five of their previous six games. Alex Bregman added two hits and scored a run to support the victory.

Crochet, now 2-1 on the season, had a no-hit bid going into the eighth inning, which ended when Chase Meidroth — one of the four prospects traded to the White Sox for Crochet — hit a single. The left-hander exited the game after that hit, finishing with 96 pitches, 65 of which were strikes.

The White Sox managed their only run when Matt Thaiss hit an RBI single off reliever Garrett Whitlock, but the rally fizzled as Joshua Palacios struck out and Miguel Vargas flied out to end the threat.

In the ninth inning, Story added insurance with his third home run of the season. Aroldis Chapman came in and secured the win with a clean ninth inning for his third save.

Chicago starter Shane Smith (0-1) gave a solid effort with six innings of two-run ball. A key moment came in the sixth inning when Story’s fly ball to the right-field corner dropped just beyond the glove of Brooks Baldwin, resulting in a two-run double that gave Boston the lead.

Looking ahead, the Red Sox will face Tampa Bay on Monday with Tanner Houck (0-1, 4.41 ERA) starting against Shane Baz (1-0, 1.38 ERA). The White Sox return home Tuesday to host the Athletics, with Sean Burke (1-2, 6.08 ERA) taking the mound.
