Walker Buehler and Alex Cora had a short night at Fenway Park on Tuesday, both ejected during the Boston Red Sox’s game against the New York Mets after disputing a controversial call.
The incident occurred in the third inning when home plate umpire Mike Estabrook called what appeared to be a clear strike a ball. Buehler, visibly frustrated, mouthed an expletive toward Estabrook and was immediately ejected. Manager Alex Cora then emerged from the dugout to confront Estabrook and was thrown out following a heated exchange. This marked Cora’s 18th career ejection and Buehler’s second—both coming against the Mets.
The game was Buehler’s return from the injured list after recovering from a right shoulder issue. Despite his early exit, the Red Sox bullpen stepped up, with six relievers combining to hold the Mets to just four hits in a 2-0 victory.
Buehler was replaced by Brennan Bernardino, who walked Juan Soto after two more balls. The pitch that triggered the incident was the second of Soto’s at-bat and widely viewed as a strike, a sentiment echoed by the game’s broadcasters.
The Red Sox improved to a 25-25 record with the win, continuing a recent stretch of strong performances. Tuesday’s game followed a 3-1 win over the Mets the previous night. Cora had missed that game to attend his daughter’s college graduation.
Though emotions ran high and led to the ejections, the Red Sox’s pitching staff delivered a solid performance to secure the shutout win.
