Max Verstappen called his Japanese Grand Prix win at Suzuka the “perfect send-off” for Honda, as Red Bull ended its engine partnership with the Japanese manufacturer on a high. Starting from pole position, Verstappen led most of the race, benefiting from clean air and a well-performing car to claim his first victory of the 2025 Formula One season.
Red Bull marked its final race with Honda at their home Grand Prix by running a special white and red livery, a tribute to the partnership. The win came at a crucial time, as the team has faced performance issues in recent races. The final laps of the 53-lap contest featured an intense battle between Verstappen and McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Norris closed the gap to under 1.5 seconds but couldn’t overtake Verstappen, who managed to hold off the pressure.
When asked if the race felt as intense from the cockpit as it looked from the outside, Verstappen confirmed it did, especially with both McLarens pushing hard. He described it as a tough but enjoyable experience, saying tire management was a challenge. He credited the win to improvements made throughout the weekend, highlighting that the car was at its best on race day and that starting from pole made a crucial difference.
Verstappen praised the team’s efforts, noting the importance of maximizing performance and being consistent. “We didn’t give up,” he said, acknowledging the progress made after a rough start to the weekend.
This season marks Red Bull’s final year with Honda before switching to Red Bull Powertrains in partnership with Ford in 2026. Honda, meanwhile, will supply engines to Aston Martin under the new F1 regulations.
Reflecting on the emotional significance of winning Honda’s final home race with Red Bull, Verstappen said he was determined to bring home the victory. “It means a lot to me,” he said. “It was in the back of my mind during those final laps. I’m incredibly proud of everything we’ve achieved with Honda, and I think this was the perfect way to say goodbye.”
