Kevin Nisbet confident Aberdeen can come up trumps in race for third as striker saves the day

Jimmy Thelin’s side had to settle for a point, as they came from two behind against fellow Euro rivals Dundee United.

Nisbet predicted: “It’s going to be an exciting finish, it’s down to us to get that third place now.”

There are just two points between third and fifth-placed United. Nisbet knows it could go to the wire over the next nine games but for the moment the Dons can park that and focus on the Scottish Cup.

They entertain Championship upstarts Queen’s Park at Pittodrie on Saturday, knowing a win would take them to Hampden for the semi-finals.

The Scotland star admitted: “For us, it’s about Saturday now and getting to a Hampden semi-final. It’s all about getting through, it doesn’t matter how it happens – a good performance, a win and get to Hampden.”

Nisbet looks like he could be the main man for Aberdeen, The forward has now taken his tally for the season to nine goals. His brace against Dundee United was vital to ensure that his team wasn’t left empty-handed.

“It’s great because coming back from two down is a hard task by the boys stuck in,” the forward acknowledged. “We’re gutted we didn’t get the three points in the end.

We started great, we got in behind well and passed the ball well but we probably just didn’t click up front. We didn’t create enough chances then conceded from two set plays, which isn’t good enough and gave ourselves a mountain to climb going in at half-time.

“The lads dug in so it was good to get a point because it was a long way back at one point. The second half performance was outstanding, we pegged them back and kept putting balls into the box.

We knew if we did that we’d get goals, thankfully we got two but we didn’t manage to get the three points. It’s great the way it came about, it keeps the momentum going and hopefully we can carry that into the cup now.”

Manager Jimmy Thelin praised Nisbet after the game for his work rate away from the games. The frontman thinks he is now starting to get the breaks and that is showing in front of goal. Nisbet admitted: “The first one (goal) I saw late, Oday Dabbagh did well to leave it because it was a great ball in from Alexander Jensen.

“The second one, I just threw myself at it and got lucky that it hit my calf then went in. That’s probably the luck I haven’t been having this season so it’s good to be on the scoresheet.

“I feel great, I feel fit and able to compete for ninety minutes now. I don’t feel leggy so I feel I can keep going, it’s great to get on the scoresheet again and hopefully I can go on a run now.”
