In a much-anticipated return to Yankee Stadium, former Yankees star Juan Soto—now playing for the New York Mets—was met with a wave of boos and jeers from the home crowd throughout the game. Soto’s first at-bat was accompanied by roaring disapproval, and when he took his position in right field, the Bleacher Creatures turned their backs on him in protest. The negative reaction continued during his second plate appearance, as fans expressed their disapproval of his move to the Mets.
Soto, once celebrated in the Bronx, has become a target for Yankee fans who now see him as a traitor. Some took their disdain to humorous extremes, including one fan carrying a large cut-out of Soto’s face adorned with signs reading “Boo this man!” and “BOOOOOOOO.” The spectacle drew mockery from SNY broadcasters Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez, and Ron Darling, who joked about the sign’s font and the fan’s dedication to his arts and crafts project.
Other fans displayed their displeasure by literally turning their backs on Soto, a gesture many considered petty and uncharacteristic for a fanbase known for its tradition and pride. While their intent may have been to rattle the four-time All-Star, the antics instead attracted widespread ridicule and may have backfired.
Despite the hostile reception, neither Soto nor the Mets seemed particularly fazed. The 26-year-old outfielder told reporters he was “ready for it” and even “enjoyed” the boos, showing his resilience. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza downplayed the crowd’s behavior, calling the fans “very respectful” compared to past experiences in the Bronx. Overall, while Yankees fans tried to make Soto uncomfortable, their efforts may have only added to the entertainment of the night.
