The Lakers’ defense was a major concern, allowing an alarming 146 points, including 44 points in the paint. This defensive collapse prompted their coach, J.J. Redick, to express his frustration during the post-game press conference. Redick didn’t hold back, describing the performance as the worst defensive effort he had seen from his team all season, especially over the past three months (via Spectrum SportsNet).
The poor showing was particularly surprising given the context. The Bulls are not considered a top-tier team, while the Lakers had recently established themselves as one of the league’s stronger defensive units. With a record of 43-27, the Lakers currently hold the fourth seed in the Western Conference with only 12 games remaining in the regular season. Their position is far from secure. They have the opportunity to climb higher and surpass the Denver Nuggets at No. 3 or even the Houston Rockets at No. 2. However, they also risk slipping down to the sixth, seventh, or eighth spots, which would force them into the Play-In Tournament.
Given the tight playoff race, the Lakers cannot afford to lose winnable games against lower-ranked teams. Every victory is crucial as the postseason approaches, and any slip-up could have significant consequences. Redick and his team will need to quickly regroup and refocus if they want to maintain or improve their position.
The Lakers’ next test comes against the Orlando Magic on Monday night, where they will aim to bounce back and deliver a stronger defensive performance. With the season nearing its conclusion, the pressure is on for the Lakers to find consistency and avoid further setbacks in their pursuit of a higher playoff seed.
