Over the past 15 years, fewer than 40% of NFL quarterbacks selected in the first round have developed into solid starters. Success depends heavily on a player’s situation. So, has Jaxson Dart found a favorable one with the New York Giants?
That remains uncertain.
Sports Illustrated’s Dan Lyons called Dart’s situation “tricky,” noting that while being chosen in the first round is a major achievement, the Giants’ circumstances are complex. The team’s leadership — head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen — are under immense pressure to make the playoffs in 2025. Daboll’s record stands at 18-32-1, and the Giants’ recent failures, particularly with Daniel Jones, have raised stakes for all involved.
To prepare for the season, the Giants signed veteran quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, who are expected to start ahead of Dart. If the team performs well, Dart can develop on the bench. However, if the team struggles, he may be thrust into action too soon. This could result in a coaching and front office overhaul, leaving Dart with a new regime that didn’t draft him — a scenario that can hinder a young quarterback’s growth, as seen with Daniel Jones.
Columnist Ed Valentine emphasized that while keeping Schoen and Daboll was likely the right move, owner John Mara’s inconsistent messaging about his confidence in them complicates matters. Mara demanded improvement and made finding a long-term quarterback the top offseason priority. Schoen responded by drafting Dart, who was reportedly Daboll’s top choice.
Still, uncertainty looms. Daboll’s job security is fragile, and if the team falters, Dart could face instability similar to what hurt Jones’ development.
On the positive side, Dart is joining an experienced offensive staff. Daboll and quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney were instrumental in Josh Allen’s growth in Buffalo, and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka contributed to Patrick Mahomes’ early success in Kansas City.
The key question is whether Daboll will remain in place long enough to properly develop Dart — and what happens if he doesn’t.
