Is This the NFL’s Next Hidden Gem? Broncos Bet Big on Brother of Record-Breaking Star

The Denver Broncos have already made headlines ahead of their rookie minicamp by bringing in former Cincinnati Bengals sixth-round pick Chris Evans for a tryout. Now, the attention turns to another intriguing prospect, Wyatt Ekeler, the younger brother of former Chargers star and current Washington Commanders running back Austin Ekeler. According to Aaron Wilson, Wyatt has received an invitation to the Broncos’ minicamp starting in early May, although he has also been invited to attend the Eagles’ camp.

Wyatt, who played safety at Wyoming, endured a challenging final season in college after suffering breaks to both thumbs in separate plays during a game against BYU. This impacted his overall performance, resulting in just one pass defended in 2024, a drop from the seven he recorded over the previous two seasons. Despite his injuries, he continued to play and even notched an interception against San Jose State while wearing casts on both wrists.

His toughness and perseverance didn’t go unnoticed. In January, Ekeler received Wyoming’s “Never Flinch” award, given in memory of former linebacker Weston Johnson, who passed away from cancer in 2014. This honor reflects Ekeler’s resilience and commitment to the game.

While there isn’t a clear starting opportunity for Ekeler in Denver due to the presence of established safeties Brandon Jones and Talanoa Hufanga, the Broncos’ limited depth at the position could provide him with an opening. If he chooses Denver over Philadelphia and performs well, he could earn a spot on the team’s practice squad or potentially carve out a more permanent role in the seasons ahead. His journey, marked by both adversity and determination, makes him a player worth watching as the rookie minicamps get underway.
