If McVay were Pinocchio, his nose would be 3 feet long. What’s he hiding?

In the lead-up to the 2025 NFL Draft, there’s been a flurry of speculation linking the Los Angeles Rams to rookie quarterback prospects. Numerous mock drafts have projected the Rams selecting a quarterback, fueled in part by reports that the team has met with at least three QB prospects. Such meetings usually suggest genuine interest—similar to how someone wouldn’t meet with a realtor without some intention of buying a home. This indicates that the Rams are at least exploring their quarterback options.

However, expressing interest doesn’t guarantee a draft selection. The Rams would need the right player to be available when it’s their turn to pick, which might be a challenge in a draft class with more demand than supply at the quarterback position.

Sports Illustrated’s Brock Vierra tackled the quarterback question head-on during a recent conversation with Rams head coach Sean McVay. When asked if the team plans to draft a quarterback, McVay responded cautiously. He claimed it was unlikely and admitted he hadn’t done extensive research on this year’s quarterback class. He expressed confidence in the current quarterback room, especially with veteran Matthew Stafford still leading the team. Still, McVay acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Stafford’s future and the possibility that he may retire soon.

Despite McVay’s comments, few believe he is truly uninformed about the rookie quarterback class. Known for his obsessive attention to detail and encyclopedic knowledge of football, McVay is famous for recalling plays and player histories with remarkable accuracy. Rams players even joke about his nonstop football talk and total immersion in the game.

Thus, the idea that McVay hasn’t studied quarterback prospects closely seems implausible. It’s more likely that he is deliberately downplaying the Rams’ intentions to avoid tipping off other teams. Discussing specifics could reveal the team’s draft strategy, which is something McVay is far too smart to do publicly.

The Rams have plenty of quarterback options across all rounds of the draft. Whether or not they select one early, McVay and general manager Les Snead likely have detailed evaluations on every top prospect. McVay’s vague responses probably serve to mislead competitors rather than reflect a lack of preparation. Ultimately, it would be unwise to dismiss the possibility that the Rams are seriously considering drafting a quarterback in 2025.
