Several former Virginia Tech football players are gaining significant attention ahead of next month’s NFL Draft in Green Bay. Unlike last year’s quieter draft, this April promises to be much more eventful for the Hokies.
One standout performer at the NFL Combine was running back Bhayshul Tuten, who turned heads with his impressive display. His strong 2024 season for Virginia Tech, combined with an outstanding performance at the combine, has helped boost his position on many teams’ draft boards.
NFL analyst Maurice James-Drew has recognized Tuten’s potential, ranking him among the top 10 running backs for the 2025 NFL Draft. Tuten had an exceptional season, rushing for 1,159 yards and scoring 15 touchdowns. After running an incredible 4.2-second 40-yard dash at the combine, his speed is undeniable. James-Drew highlighted Tuten’s ability as a powerful runner who breaks tackles and has the potential to be a three-down back. He specifically referenced Tuten’s four-touchdown game against Boston College as an example of his explosive playmaking ability. The analyst also suggested that Tuten could thrive in an offensive system similar to Kyle Shanahan’s, much like Isaac Guerendo did with the San Francisco 49ers last season.
James-Drew categorizes Tuten as a “system back,” comparing him to Guerendo, who played at Louisville in the ACC before joining the 49ers. In his rookie season, Guerendo carried the ball 84 times, gaining 420 yards and scoring four touchdowns. If Tuten can match or exceed those numbers in his first NFL season, it would be an excellent start to his professional career.
There’s no doubt that Tuten will hear his name called in Green Bay in late April, but his journey won’t stop there. His talent and work ethic suggest that he will make an impact during training camp and fight for playing time in 2025, regardless of which team drafts him. With his combination of speed, strength, and versatility, he has the potential to be a valuable asset in the NFL.
