Vice President JD Vance experienced an awkward moment during a White House ceremony when he accidentally dropped part of Ohio State’s national championship trophy. The event took place on Monday as Vance and President Donald Trump welcomed the Buckeyes, who had secured a 34-23 victory over Notre Dame in January to claim their first national title in ten years.
After giving brief remarks, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day presented Trump with a custom jersey and helmet. While posing for pictures, Vance gestured toward the trophy, seemingly asking for it to be included in the photos. With the help of a player, he attempted to lift the trophy. However, as Vance picked it up, the top part separated from its base. The player managed to catch the main portion, but the stand slipped from Vance’s grasp and hit the floor.
Vance retrieved the stand and tried to reattach it but eventually decided to hold just the trophy itself. Coach Day noticed the incident, briefly approached to assist, and then returned to his place beside Trump.
The mishap quickly went viral on social media, with many users poking fun at Vance’s clumsy moment. Despite the criticism, Vance responded with humor, posting on Twitter/X that he “didn’t want anyone after Ohio State to get the trophy so I decided to break it.”
