The New York Yankees have been hit hard by injuries during spring training, losing key players like Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, Giancarlo Stanton, and DJ LeMahieu. With Opening Day 2025 approaching, recent MLB rumors suggest the team is still looking to make a roster move.
One of the Yankees’ biggest concerns is their starting rotation, particularly the need for a frontline pitcher. While top pitchers like Sandy Alcantara of the Miami Marlins and Dylan Cease of the San Diego Padres have been mentioned in trade speculation, they are unlikely to be moved until the summer. Other potential trade targets, such as Erick Fedde and Jordan Montgomery, could bolster the rotation, but New York appears set to rely on Will Warren, Carlos Carrasco, and Marcus Stroman for now.
Beyond pitching, the Yankees are also looking to improve at third base. According to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, the team is particularly focused on acquiring a right-handed hitter to pair with Oswaldo Cabrera in a platoon role. Last season, Cabrera posted a .247 batting average with a .661 OPS in 299 at-bats. However, he struggled significantly against left-handed pitching, hitting just .190 with a .229 on-base percentage. Against right-handed pitchers, he fared better with a .268/.320/.409 slash line.
Although no specific trade targets have been named, the Yankees could explore several options. The Pittsburgh Pirates might be willing to move Isiah Kiner-Falefa, or New York could revisit talks with the St. Louis Cardinals regarding Nolan Arenado. However, a more likely scenario is that the Yankees will acquire a third baseman from players who become available after spring-training roster cuts or via waivers.
As the season nears, the Yankees’ focus remains on strengthening their roster, with third base being a priority. Whether through trades or last-minute additions, the team is determined to make improvements before Opening Day.
