In Cardiff, South Wales, residents of a sheltered housing block were evacuated following the fire close to the Principality Stadium, the site of international rugby union games.
Residents in the vicinity of a major UK sports stadium have been forced to evacuate due to a massive fire that has started.
Following the horrific fire, residents of a sheltered housing unit close to Cardiff’s Principality Stadium were being relocated on Tuesday morning.
Just after midnight, the fire broke out at Dyfrig House, across from the 74,500-seat stadium that hosts Wales national rugby union matches. Firefighters fought the fire all night.
Smoke could be seen billowing for miles overnight and fire chiefs urged residents across the city to close their doors and windows, Wales Online reports.
A statement from South Wales Fire and Rescue said: “In attendance in Riverside, Cardiff. Smoke travelling to Cardiff Bay area. Keeps doors and windows closed.”
The fire started in the Fitzhamon Embankment area in the Riverside area of the city and opposite the city centre stadium.
But residents as far away as Cardiff Bay – around two miles away – were being urged to take precautions.
Matt Jones, head of operational response at South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said they were called to a “significant building fire” at a sheltered accommodation facility in Cardiff.
He said: “On arrival, our crews were faced with a well-developed fire in the roof space of the building.
“Thanks to their swift and decisive actions, the fire was successfully contained to the roof, preventing significant spread, and ensuring that adjacent buildings remained unaffected.”
No one was hurt in the the blaze, but large parts of the building were badly damaged.
Photographs from the scene show the damage to the roof, which has been completed gutted by the blaze.
Lorraine Griffiths, assistant director of Pobl, said while they were disappointed about the damage to their building, everyone was “safe and well”.
She declined to comment further pending an investigation.
Crews left the scene early this morning but are set to return to the site to check for any flare-ups. A fire investigation is due to take place.
