Breaking: Leinster and Ireland ‘engine room’ signs new deal ahead of Six Nations showdown with France

McCarthy, 23, will earn his 18th Ireland cap in the Six Nations title showdown with France at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday and is a further boost for Simon Easterby’s side after Mack Hansen’s new deal was announced earlier today.

After making his Test debut against Australia in the 2022 November series, the Leinster second row really announced himself on the big stage with his performance against the French in the opening game of the 2023 Six Nations in Marseille.

He played in all four November games in 2024 but a concussion in the run-up to this year’s Six Nations opener forced him to sit out the win over England and the victory away to Scotland, but he returned to the No.4 jersey for the third round success against Wales in Cardiff.

He has made 42 appearances for Leinster since making his senior debut against Cardiff Blues in January 2022.

“I am delighted to continue my association with Leinster and Ireland and I believe there’s a lot more to come as we build towards an exciting end to the season and beyond.

I have loved playing for my home province and representing my country is a huge honour which means the world to me.

I would like to thank my team-mates and coaches for their help and support and I have no doubt that there’s more to come as we collectively build towards the future.”

IRFU Performance Director David Humphreys reacted: “Since making his provincial and international debuts three years ago, Joe has quickly established himself in the engine room of the Leinster and Ireland packs and we are delighted that he has agreed this new three-year deal.

“His application, physicality and talent has enhanced his reputation for club and country and it is a big statement for Irish rugby that one of the top young talents has committed his long-term future here. We all look forward to watching his continued progression over the years to come.
