Newcastle United were defeated on Saturday evening thanks to the introduction of the outstanding Kevin De Bruyne.

Newcastle fell victim to De Bruyne’s brilliance after putting in a good display against Manchester City, even taking the lead after falling behind.

Obviously, this does not make their fourth Premier League defeat in a row any easier to stomach, but it is a sign of progress.

Despite being battered at St James’ Park on Boxing Day by Nottingham Forest, Newcastle proved they can compete against a truly elite side.

Nonetheless, it was De Bruyne who made the decisive difference.

Newcastle injury concern for Bruno Guimaraes

Guimaraes is crucial to Newcastle, who have yet to win a Premier League game without him since joining from Lyon in January 2022.

So the fact that the 26-year-old appeared to be injured on Saturday will be of great worry. Indeed, The Athletic’s Chris Waugh reported that Guimaraes came out for the second half with strapping around his left hamstring.

Hopefully, the midfielder will be able to rest during the upcoming vacation.
