The 6’6″ Award-Winning Giant Ohio State Must Land—Before It’s Too Late

Following Ohio State’s Spring Game on April 12, head coach Ryan Day emphasized the importance of using the transfer portal to fill gaps in the roster. Just a week later, the Buckeyes have reportedly taken a step toward strengthening their offensive line.

On April 19, Pete Nakos of On3 reported that Ohio State extended an offer to Orion Irving, an offensive lineman from Sam Houston State. A standout selection to the 2023 Conference USA All-Freshman Team, Irving is scheduled to visit Columbus on April 25. He also has visits lined up with Syracuse, and interest is building from other programs like Texas A&M, Mississippi State, Cal, and UCF.

Irving made an impression during his redshirt freshman year by starting the final five games at right tackle. Although an early injury sidelined him during the 2024 season, he made a strong comeback, starting the last four games at left tackle. His versatility and resilience make him a valuable addition for Ohio State, which is looking to enhance its depth on the offensive line.

In addition to Irving, the Buckeyes are also hosting Georgia Southern defensive lineman Troy Pikes next weekend. Pikes recently visited Georgia and is garnering attention from several top programs, including UCF, Maryland, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, and Ole Miss.

Ohio State’s active pursuit of talent on both sides of the line shows Coach Day’s dedication to building a championship-caliber team. While Pikes—standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 290 pounds—didn’t see much playing time last season, recording only five solo tackles, his potential has drawn significant interest. The Buckeyes’ moves in the portal reflect a strategic effort to reinforce both offensive and defensive fronts as they prepare for another title run.
