Former Kentucky basketball guard Reed Sheppard earned All-Summer League First Team honors after an impressive performance in the NBA Summer League. Sheppard, along with Kel’el Ware (Miami Heat), Scotty Pippen Jr. and GG Jackson (Memphis Grizzlies), and Jordan Miller (Los Angeles Clippers), made the First Team.
In Las Vegas, Sheppard averaged 20.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 2.8 steals per game, shooting 50 percent from the field. Despite the Rockets’ 2-3 record, Sheppard’s performance was a standout, even though he sat out the final game. Selected third overall in last month’s draft, Sheppard scored 20+ points seven times during his season at Kentucky and did so in three of his four Summer League games.
An NBA executive expressed admiration for Sheppard’s game sense and confidence. Sheppard’s freshman season at Kentucky saw him average 12.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 2.5 steals, with a 52.1 percent shooting from three-point range. Entering the Summer League with the fifth-highest odds for Rookie of the Year, his strong performance has likely improved those odds. ESPN’s Kevin Pelton noted that Sheppard’s play in Vegas suggests he will earn regular playing time as a rookie.
