The Houston Astros are bringing back a familiar face by signing Aledmys Diaz to a minor league deal, as reported by Brian McTaggart. Diaz, who played for the Astros from 2019 to 2022, is known for his versatility, having played both infield and corner outfield positions.

Diaz joined Houston in 2019 after a stint with the Toronto Blue Jays. During his time with the Astros, he slashed .255 and served as a key bench player, contributing to their 2022 World Series title. Following his successful run with Houston, Diaz signed a two-year contract with the Oakland Athletics, where he became a regular starter. However, his performance declined, batting only .229 with four home runs and 24 RBIs in 109 games during the 2023 season.

Injuries marred Diaz’s 2024 season with Oakland, limiting him to just 12 games where he hit a mere .103. Consequently, the Athletics released him last week. Now, Diaz has a fresh start with the Astros, though he will need to work his way up from the minor leagues. While he faces competition for a spot on the bench, his past success and versatility make him a valuable asset. Diaz was an All-Star in his rookie year with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2016.
