Traded, Forgotten… and Now Back to Haunt Boston? The MLB Debut You Can’t Miss This Weekend

The Boston Red Sox are gearing up for a potentially meaningful reunion when they visit the Chicago White Sox this weekend, possibly facing one of their former prospects.

So far, the Red Sox’s 2025 season has been marked by inconsistency. Under manager Alex Cora, the team has alternated between winning and losing streaks, making it tough to gain traction in the standings. However, their upcoming schedule offers a chance to stabilize. Starting Friday, Boston begins a 10-game stretch against struggling teams — the Chicago White Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays — both of whom are currently performing below .500.

This weekend’s three-game series in Chicago could include a notable reunion: infielder Chase Meidroth, a former Red Sox prospect, has just been called up to the majors by the White Sox. Meidroth was part of the December trade that brought Garrett Crochet to Boston, a deal that included three other prospects. With Chicago’s 40-man roster currently full, adjustments will be needed to activate Meidroth, but it’s expected that he’ll make his MLB debut during the series against his former team.

Meidroth, selected by the Red Sox in the fourth round of the 2022 MLB Draft, spent three seasons in the organization, steadily progressing through the minor leagues. His 2024 campaign was a breakout year, as he hit .293 with seven home runs, 57 RBIs, 105 walks, and 13 stolen bases over 122 games for Triple-A Worcester. He carried that momentum into this year with Triple-A Charlotte, where he posted a .267 average and an impressive 1.050 OPS in just nine games, along with three home runs and eight walks.

Adding another layer to the reunion narrative, Garrett Crochet is scheduled to pitch for Boston on Sunday, potentially facing his former club. The left-handed starter has made a strong impression early in 2025, with a 1.45 ERA and 17 strikeouts over 18 2/3 innings in his first three starts. He’s quickly justifying the Red Sox’s decision to sign him to a $170 million contract extension.

In a rare scenario where both teams seem to benefit from a high-profile trade, the upcoming series highlights how the Red Sox and White Sox might have struck a mutually rewarding deal. As the weekend unfolds, fans will be watching closely to see how this reunion plays out on the field.
