The Golden State Warriors are reportedly looking to revamp their roster and coaching staff after a disappointing 2023-24 NBA season. According to The Athletic’s Anthony Slater, the Warriors have recently had discussions with former Los Angeles Lakers coach Darvin Ham, citing league sources.
With lead assistant Kenny Atkinson’s future uncertain due to head-coaching interest from other teams, including the Milwaukee Bucks, Lakers, and Cleveland Cavaliers, the Warriors are exploring potential additions to their coaching staff. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Cavaliers have been granted permission to interview Atkinson and New Orleans Pelicans assistant James Borrego for their head-coaching vacancy.
Despite Ham having two years left on his Lakers contract, he was fired earlier this month after just two seasons. His dismissal came shortly after the Lakers were eliminated by the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the NBA playoffs for the second consecutive year.
Even if Atkinson stays, the Warriors are considering bolstering their coaching staff. This follows the departures of Mike Brown and Jama Mahlalela, as well as the tragic passing of Dejan Milojević.
While discussions between the Warriors and Ham have occurred, they aren’t expected to lead to a hire. However, this indicates Golden State’s interest in adding a prominent assistant coach, preferably someone with experience as a head coach or a former player.
