This autumn, Aaron Rodgers was forced to choose between competing for president or staying on the football field. The football field was his choice.

The quarterback for the New York Jets addressed a claim from earlier this year—that third-party presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. thought of him as his vice presidential running mate—for the first time this week as the NFL got set to begin organized team activities.

How far did the discussions go? Although Rodgers claimed to have discussed the idea with Kennedy, he ultimately realized that he would not have been able to serve as both an NFL quarterback and a vice presidential candidate.

Rodgers declared at a press conference, “I love Bobby.” “We had a few pretty good talks, but ultimately, he had to decide whether to continue playing or resign and become his vice president. And I’d like to carry on playing.

Because of Rodgers’ choice, his tenure as the quarterback for the Jets will go beyond the four games it involved in the previous campaign, which was cut short by an Achilles injury. Before being traded to the Jets a year ago, the 40-year-old spent 18 seasons with the Packers, winning four MVP honors and a Super Bowl during that time.

His political views, which include strong anti-vaccine sentiment and an abundance of conspiracy theories, have become more vocal in recent years.
