Michael Forbes has returned to West Ham United after his loan spell at Colchester United was cut short

The 20-year-old defender, who played in an in-house training game at Colchester before joining the U’s on loan from the Hammers toward the end of the January transfer window, has already had surgery for the injury.

After the setback, Forbes will now be rehabilitating at West Ham, which may allow Frankie Terry, who was supposed to return on loan, to stay at the JobServe Community Stadium for the rest of the season.

“It’s just very regrettable,” Colchester head coach Danny Cowley stated.

“It’s quite disheartening to hear that he had to have surgery after rupturing his hamstring during training.

“Michael hasn’t had much luck at all because he just recovered from the second hamstring injury.

He did it in an in-house game that we had.

“We were really looking forward to working with him.

“We’re really thankful to West Ham for loaning him to us.

“He had the operation last Saturday and he’s just starting the very early part of his rehabilitation.” Former Bristol Rovers defender Forbes had played the first half of the season on loan before suffering a hamstring injury that ended his time at the League One team.

The Northern Ireland international made 12 appearances with the Pirates, seven of which were in League One, including two starts.

Forbes joined West Ham’s academy in the summer of 2020, and two years later, he got his first professional contract.

He agreed a new deal with the Hammers until June 2026, in the 2023/24 season.
