One of the most intriguing stories leading into the 2025 NFL Draft is where Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty will be selected. As the Heisman Trophy runner-up, Jeanty delivered an extraordinary 2024 season, coming within yards of breaking Barry Sanders’ single-season rushing record. His impressive performance helped lead the Broncos to a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff.
Following his standout season, Jeanty declared for the NFL Draft, a decision that surprised no one. Most scouts agree that he will be the first running back selected and is likely to be taken within the first half of the opening round. With draft day approaching, Jeanty is widely projected to be chosen within the top 10 picks, with the Chicago Bears, who hold the 10th pick, considered the lowest spot he might fall.
Wherever he ends up, Jeanty is expected to make an immediate impact. However, ESPN analyst Louis Riddick believes he could do more than that if the Bears draft him—potentially rewriting the record books. Riddick suggested on social media that Jeanty could break Eric Dickerson’s rookie rushing record if he joins Chicago, citing the strength of the Bears’ offensive line.
Eric Dickerson’s rookie records, set in 1983, include 390 rushing attempts, 1,808 rushing yards, and 18 rushing touchdowns. Although the current NFL schedule allows for one more game than when Dickerson played, surpassing these milestones would still be a significant feat, even for a player as talented and highly regarded as Jeanty.
Riddick’s point holds weight considering the improvements the Bears made during the offseason. Chicago not only bolstered their offensive line but also brought in new coaching leadership. Under new head coach Ben Johnson, the Bears could provide an ideal environment for Jeanty to thrive. Johnson, who previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, emphasized the running game during his tenure. The Lions ranked in the top 11 in rushing yards and top three in rushing touchdowns across all three of his seasons in Detroit.
Given these factors, if Jeanty lands in Chicago, he could be positioned to have one of the most productive rookie seasons in NFL history. With his blend of talent, opportunity, and the right system, the former Boise State star has a legitimate chance to make headlines and challenge long-standing records from the moment he steps onto the field.
