Title: Steelers Likely to Draft Local College Talent With High Upside

Ben Standig of The Athletic predicts that the Pittsburgh Steelers will select Olumuyiwa Fashanu, a standout left tackle from Penn State, in the upcoming NFL draft. Fashanu, ranked highly in various draft boards, presents an intriguing prospect for the Steelers.

Despite being considered a top 15 pick and often projected within the top 10, Fashanu might fall to the Steelers at No. 20, as suggested by Standig’s mock draft. His impressive performance at Penn State, earning All-Big Ten honors and the Rimington-Pace Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year award, underscores his potential.

Described by NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein as a “toolsy two-year starter with loads of potential,” Fashanu’s fit with the Steelers revolves around his skill set and the team’s offensive strategy under new coordinator Arthur Smith.

Fashanu’s potential role with the Steelers hinges on his development in pass protection, an area highlighted by Zierlein as needing improvement. However, his strengths in run blocking align well with the Steelers’ run-first approach, making him a viable option at left tackle.

The Steelers’ current lineup includes Broderick Jones at right tackle, and drafting Fashanu could solidify the team’s offensive line for the future. While Fashanu may need some time to refine his skills, particularly in pass protection, his athleticism and upside make him a valuable prospect for Pittsburgh.

However, concerns about Fashanu’s footwork and readiness for immediate contribution raise questions about whether he’s the perfect fit for the Steelers, especially considering their priority for pass protection with veteran quarterback Russell Wilson. Despite these considerations, Fashanu’s talent and potential make him a compelling option for Pittsburgh in the draft.
