The 2024 NFL Combine is underway, and we’ve already highlighted standout players among interior defensive linemen, edge rushers, off-the-ball linebackers, and cornerbacks. Now, it’s time to focus on the remaining defensive group – the safeties. In this article, we’ll delve into the notable prospects who caught our attention in Indianapolis.
Calen Bullock, USC (6 feet 2 inches, 188 pounds).
Bullock wasn’t initially on my pre-Combine watchlist due to speculation about his high draft stock for the Lions. However, NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah suggested during the broadcast that Bullock might be considered for a switch to cornerback, leading to his inclusion as a potential option for the Lions.
With a lengthy frame (32.5-inch arm length) and impressive speed (4.48 40-yard dash), Bullock exhibited center fielder range and smooth transitions between angles. His on-field drills showcased minimal wasted movement, displaying agility and anticipation in intercepting airborne passes.
Javon Bullard, Georgia (5 feet 10.5 inches, 198 pounds).
As the top safety on my pre-Combine watchlist, Bullard lived up to expectations in both measurements and on-field drills. His 4.47 40-yard dash highlighted his speed, evident in smooth transitions, decisive breaks, precise drill execution, and maintained speed adjustments.
Cole Bishop, Utah (6 feet 2 inches, 206 pounds)
One of the day’s standout performers, Bishop emphatically addressed concerns about his long speed by running a 4.45 40-yard dash, earning an unofficial 9.82 Relative Athletic Score (RAS). Bishop demonstrated silky-smooth movements, exceptional balance, range, and precision in drills, showcasing his versatility as a physical safety.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, Texas Tech (5 feet 10.5 inches, 197 pounds).
A pre-Combine watchlist inclusion, Taylor-Demerson’s speed (4.41 40-yard dash) translated seamlessly to on-field drills. His agility and ability to adjust to poorly thrown balls, including making catches off the tops of his shoes, showcased his promising skills.
Sione Vaki, Utah (5 feet 11 inches, 210 pounds).
Another pre-Combine watchlist prospect, Vaki’s versatility stood out as he played both ways at Utah last season. Despite resembling a running back, Vaki exhibited safety-like aggression and focus during on-field drills. His experience on offense shone through as he effortlessly intercepted any ball in his vicinity. Vaki even participated in running back drills post-safety drills at the request of teams considering him for an offensive role.
