Title: Insights from Day 1 of the 2024 NFL Combine.

The initial day of the NFL Combine kicked off with on-field drills featuring defensive linemen and linebackers at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The Detroit Lions, including general manager Brad Holmes, closely observed the showcase, drawing several notable takeaways.

Chop Robinson’s Remarkable Speed:
Penn State’s Chop Robinson, initially considered a fringe first-round prospect, showcased remarkable athleticism despite modest college production. His 4.49 40-yard dash, coupled with a 34.5″ vertical jump and a 4.25 20-yard shuttle, emphasized his potential, even prompting questions about his adaptability against larger opponents.

Fiske’s Surge in Stock:
Fiske, previously seen as a Day Two pick from Florida State, significantly enhanced his standing with an outstanding all-around performance. Dominating in the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, broad jump, and 20-yard shuttle among defensive tackles, Fiske’s agility and versatility, especially as a pass-rusher, impressed scouts. His 4.74 40-yard dash at 292 pounds underscored his athleticism.

Texas Teammates’ Solid Showing:
Byron Murphy II and T’Vondre Sweat, both from Texas, displayed noteworthy skills in the interior defensive line category. Murphy, living up to expectations, ran a 4.88 40-yard dash, solidifying his position as one of the top tackles in the Draft. Meanwhile, Sweat, at 6-foot-4 and 366 pounds, demonstrated mobility with a 5.27 40-yard dash, enhancing his status as a potential fringe first-rounder.

Dallas Turner Emerges as Top EDGE Prospect:
Alabama’s Dallas Turner outshone as the premier EDGE prospect, showcasing elite explosiveness and speed. His 4.46 40-yard dash, along with a 40.5″ vertical jump and a 10’7″ broad jump, positioned him as a strong contender to be the first defender selected in April’s Draft. Turner’s 22.5 college sacks further affirmed his potential impact off the edge at the professional level.

Wilson Shines Among Linebackers:
With several top linebacker prospects opting out of testing, N.C. State’s Payton Wilson seized the opportunity to excel. Winning the 40-yard dash in his position with a 4.43 time, Wilson, a middle-round projection, showcased his skills with a 9’11” broad jump and a 34.5″ vertical. His impressive performance on Thursday bolstered his draft prospects among a competitive linebacker field.
