Dell McGee is hired by Georgia State; Georgia loses a major recruit as Bulldogs assistant departs to lead Panthers.
Georgia State has appointed Dell McGee, who previously served as the running backs coach for the University of Georgia, as their new head coach following Shawn Elliott’s sudden departure. McGee, who also held the role of run game coordinator at Georgia since 2019, is reportedly set to sign a five-year contract. Elliott left his position during spring practice to take on roles as the tight ends coach and run game coordinator at South Carolina.
Athletic director Charlie Cobb expressed confidence in McGee’s abilities, citing his exemplary character and dedication to developing players. Cobb anticipates that McGee’s track record of success, both at high school and college levels, will lead Georgia State’s football program to new heights.
This marks McGee’s first head coaching position at the collegiate level. His departure from Georgia is notable, given his significant contributions as a key assistant coach and top recruiter since joining Kirby Smart’s coaching staff in 2016.
Originally from Georgia and a former running back at Auburn, McGee has been instrumental in recruiting top talent for Georgia, securing commitments from numerous high-profile prospects. His impact extends beyond recruiting, as Georgia has consistently boasted one of the SEC’s strongest rushing attacks under his guidance, averaging over 190 yards per game for the past three seasons.
McGee’s influence has also been evident in player development, with several of his running backs being selected in the NFL Draft, including standout players like Nick Chubb.
With deep roots in Georgia and extensive coaching experience within the state, McGee is well-positioned to enhance Georgia State’s talent pool and strengthen connections within the local recruiting landscape. Having spent the majority of his coaching career in Georgia, McGee’s familiarity with the region should benefit the Georgia State program as it seeks to grow and succeed.
