According to Patrick Magee of the Times-Picayune, the circumstances surrounding his death are unknown.

Powell recorded 79 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, and 11 sacks in four seasons with the Gators. Two knee injuries cut short his college career. He tore his ACL during the 2012 spring game and had another tear months later while working on his comeback.

The California native returned in 2013 and impressed enough to become a fifth-round pick by the Saints in the 2014 NFL draft. As a rookie, he appeared in 14 games with the Saints, largely on special teams.

The Saints waived Powell in September 2015. He later joined the practice teams of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears, and Seattle Seahawks, but was unable to return to an NFL field.
