Analyzing vague social media posts can be risky, but given the circumstances, it appears that veteran safety Tracy Walker may have concluded his tenure with the Detroit Lions.

On Tuesday, Walker posted a lengthy message on Instagram expressing gratitude for his six years with the team. The post conveyed appreciation for Detroit, the Ford family, fans, supporters, and the city itself. While not explicitly a farewell, the tone of the message suggests a reflective moment. Walker hinted at the challenges and triumphs during his time with the team and expressed optimism for the future, signaling a determined approach for Year 7.

Viewed in isolation, the Instagram post might not definitively signal a departure. However, many have anticipated Walker’s release, especially considering his diminished role last year, where he was inactive for all three of Detroit’s playoff games. Complicating matters is Walker’s substantial salary increase expected in 2024, amounting to over $12.8 million against the cap. It seems likely that the Lions will release him, generating $5.5 million in cap space but still carrying over $7 million in dead cap.

UPDATE: Reports from both ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Detroit Free Press’ Dave Birkett confirm that Walker is indeed being released.

Drafted in the third round by Detroit in 2018, Walker has had a notable Lions career with 79 games (43 starts), 398 tackles, 23 passes defended, and three interceptions. If this marks the end of Walker’s time in Detroit, it signifies the conclusion of a significant chapter in his professional football career.
