Under Flanagan, the Dragons pass their first game.

NRL 2021: Corey Norman vs NRL, St George Illawarra Dragons, Anthony Griffin, street fight

“The initial half receives a positive assessment, while the latter half is deemed less satisfactory,” remarked Shane Flanagan, the recently appointed coach of St George Illawarra, as he evaluated his team’s performance in their inaugural match under his guidance against South Sydney. Despite a 28-6 defeat in the Charity Shield, the scores were level at 6-6 when Flanagan made substantial substitutions at halftime.

Flanagan acknowledged the competitiveness of the first half, with both teams displaying solid defense and scoring tries off the opposition’s errors. However, he expressed concern about the team’s youthful players, noting that they struggled in the second half, highlighting the developmental phase they are currently in.

The Dragons’ coach highlighted missed opportunities in the offensive play, citing instances where fullback Tyrell Sloan could have scored but failed to capitalize. Despite creating try-scoring opportunities, the team fell short of converting them into points. Flanagan emphasized the need for sharper offensive execution and acknowledged that defensive lapses, such as the spilled ball leading to the Rabbitohs’ opening try, proved costly.

Plans to experiment with positional changes between Sloan and Zac Lomax were hindered by Lomax’s back spasms, limiting his involvement. Flanagan, however, anticipates Lomax’s availability for the upcoming Pre-season Challenge match against the Wests Tigers. Additionally, he expects Raymond Faitala-Mariner, a new recruit, to make an appearance in the upcoming game.

Reflecting on Lomax’s performance on the wing, Flanagan noted that the player faced challenges due to a back injury during the game, hindering a comprehensive assessment. Despite the setbacks, Flanagan considers the adjustments a work in progress and hopes for improved performances as the players recover and gain more game time.
