C.J. Donaldson made his first public appearance as an Ohio State football player on Wednesday, offering insights into his transition from West Virginia to the Buckeyes. He addressed questions about his decision to transfer, his relationship with his new teammates, and the appeal of Ohio State’s offensive system. However, the most recurring topic was his physical transformation.
Donaldson revealed that he weighed 243 pounds when he arrived in January, but his current weight is significantly lower than the 237 pounds listed on the team’s spring roster. This shift in physique suggests he might offer more than just short-yardage power running, which many initially expected from him.
According to Donaldson, Ohio State’s running backs coach, Carlos Locklyn, wanted him to slim down while maintaining his physicality to improve his explosiveness and endurance. The Buckeyes’ running back room is in transition, aiming to replace key players Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson. This young group includes sophomore James Peoples, who is expected to be the lead back, along with sophomore Sam Williams-Dixon, freshmen Bo Jackson and Isiah West, and senior TC Caffey. Additionally, incoming freshman Anthony “Turbo” Rogers will join the team before the 2025 season.
Heading into the new season, there was uncertainty about how Ohio State would distribute carries among the backs. Last year’s approach—sharing reps between Henderson and Judkins to keep them fresh—seemed difficult to replicate. However, with Donaldson’s refined physique and enhanced agility, the team might be able to maintain a similar strategy.
Locklyn described Donaldson as a “slasher,” highlighting his speed, strong hands, and ability to push forward in contact situations. Despite his size, Donaldson moves well, displaying impressive footwork, vision, and catching ability. His versatility adds another layer to Ohio State’s offense.
Donaldson’s background also sets him apart. In high school, he played receiver before briefly transitioning to tight end. Now, as a running back, he retains his pass-catching skills, making him a valuable asset. His strength running through defenders, combined with newfound speed and agility, makes him a more dynamic player.
Summing up his transformation, Donaldson expressed confidence in his enhanced athleticism, jokingly comparing his speed to that of The Flash. With his improved conditioning and skill set, he could play a significant role in Ohio State’s backfield this season.
