Can the Denver Broncos uncover a hidden gem among the prospects who missed out on the combine?

In preparation for the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, 321 prospects have received invitations. However, approximately 30 talented individuals are left out each year, leading to speculation about potential steals. The process of selecting combine invitees involves team representatives voting for prospects through an online portal in December and January after underclassmen declare. This strategic voting can result in some deserving players being snubbed.

In the 2023 NFL Draft, 35 prospects were drafted without a combine invitation, with 10 of them playing on offense. Notable players like Chandler Zavala were among them, drafted as the 114th overall pick, with six others chosen in the seventh round. This year, there are 11 prospects who could still make an impact despite not receiving a combine invite.

One such player is Taulia Tagovailoa, a quarterback from Maryland, who excelled at the Shrine Bowl but has lingering questions about his arm strength. Carson Steele, a running back from UCLA, faced exclusion despite a solid season and enhanced competition. Jabari Small from Tennessee impressed at the Hula Bowl and Shrine Bowl but lacked sufficient production in 2023. Deshaun Fenwick, an Oregon State running back, missed out despite consistent on-field performances and potential as a receiver.

Blake Watson, a running back from Memphis, is an explosive player with over 3,000 yards rushing in the last three seasons, and his exclusion seems inexplicable. Casey Washington, a wide receiver from Illinois, displayed consistency but faced challenges due to being part of a subpar offense. Joshua Cephus, a UTSA wide receiver, dominated his competition with impressive yardage and touchdowns in 2023.

On the offensive line, Doug Nester from West Virginia has experience and a solid performance record, while Darrian Dalcourt from Alabama showcased versatility. Willis Patrick from TCU is a powerful lineman whose athleticism could have been assessed at the combine. Sincere Haynesworth from Tulane, a consistent player with significant center experience, faced exclusion due to questions about size and length.

The Broncos, with limited draft picks, must decide whether to take a chance on players they did not see at the combine. Although the combine is highly valued, some impactful rookies emerge from the pool of snubbed prospects. The Broncos may find hidden talent among them, contributing to their roster despite not having the opportunity to showcase their skills at the combine.
