Luka Doncic’s Remarkable NBA Season: How Many Mavericks Wins Will It Take for MVP?The Mavericks' defense has fallen apart - Mavs Moneyball

Luka Doncic is having a remarkable season, with historical statistics, but the likelihood of him winning the NBA MVP award will depend on how well the Dallas Mavericks perform in the remainder of the 2023-24 regular season.

The 24-year-old Dallas Mavericks superstar has been putting up extraordinary numbers, averaging 34.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 9.6 assists in the first 46 games of the season. If Doncic maintains these statistics over the last 28 games, he would become the first player in NBA history to finish a regular season with averages of at least 34 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists. Even when lowering the criteria to seasons where a player has averaged at least 30 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists, only four players in NBA history have achieved this feat: Oscar Robertson (1960-61, 1961-62, 1963-64, 1964-65), Michael Jordan (1988-89), Russell Westbrook (2016-17), and Doncic himself last season (2022-23).

Despite these impressive numbers, Doncic has not received the attention he deserves in national media MVP rankings. This is largely due to the Mavericks having a mediocre record for a significant part of the season and grappling with multiple roster injuries. However, Doncic and the Mavericks are making efforts to alter this narrative, as they recently secured a season-high five consecutive wins, with one more game against the San Antonio Spurs before the All-Star break.

In a recent episode of the Mavs Step Back Podcast, the focus was on the Mavericks’ victory over the Washington Wizards. Despite facing challenges, Doncic and his teammates overcame an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit, securing a 112-104 win. The podcast also delved into topics such as Doncic’s MVP chances, the impact of Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington since joining the team through trades, and various other subjects.
