The hosts took a well-earned lead at halftime thanks to a brilliant goal from former Terriers midfielder Jon Russell.

However, Town countered with goals from substitute Josh Koroma and Ben Wiles to win a seasonal double, attacking their sizable crowd of 4,502 on the restart.

For their part, Barnsley’s season is in risk of faltering as they have now lost six games.

“Listen, I’m frustrated and angry,” Clarke remarked. As the boss, I always accept accountability and responsibility.

However, the players today, especially in the second half, fell well short of our required standard, which has happened far too frequently in too many games this season.

What I say to my players is ‘don’t go through your careers not winning anything and nott end up getting promoted and getting that feeling.’ To be able to do that, you have got to be at it day in, day out.

“This performance moved from one place to another. There was simply a lack of experience and knowledge, which is why there is such a huge disparity.

Due to the absence of Luca (Connell), Phillo (Adam Phillips), and Marc Roberts—all of whom are seasoned players at this level at the football club—and the fact that the other players failed to step up when we didn’t start in the second half, we have one or two issues.

“I’m not sure where to begin with the goals. It’s time to “lock us down.”

Phillips missed out with his partner due to give birth, while Connell picked up a foot injury in last weekend’s loss at Stockport.

Regarding Barnsley’s current season standing, Clarke continued: “To be completely honest, I think there are six or seven players in the group who are top-six League One players, but with the rest, I have got to try and get them up to that level.”

“Adam’s missus is having a baby and Luca got a massive bad whack on his foot and we’ve had it scanned and had the all-clear on that. But he couldn’t participate today.”
