Despite criticism, Dan Campbell receives a massive vote of confidence from Detroit Lions All-Pro OT.
Although Dan Campbell is still receiving harsh criticism for his choices after the Detroit Lions’ NFC Championship loss to the San Francisco 49ers, one of his players has come to his support.
In an interview at the Pro Bowl, Penei Sewell declared that he is a devoted fan of Dan Campbell, claiming that he has “got his back until the end.”
“I disagree with any critiques made of Coach. Till the very end, I’ve got his back,” Sewell assured ESPN. “I’m right beside him if he tells me to jump off a cliff with him.”
“I really mean it. We simply need to carry out whatever he orders and says. That’s truly our fault. That’s my man,” he continued.
Why is Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions being criticized?
At the half, the Detroit Lions led the San Francisco 49ers 24-7 and appeared to be headed for their first Super Bowl appearance. But Kyle Shanahan and company had other ideas, as they outscored the Detroit Lions 27 times in a row in the second half before they finally scored a consolation touchdown.
Many people think that the Detroit Lions lost out on multiple fourth down opportunities because of Dan Campbell’s aggression, since he chose to go for it with his offense rather than kicking field goals to add extra points.
In the grand scheme of things, though, Dan Campbell is not solely to blame because the Detroit Lions’ struggles with fourth downs are primarily the result of their subpar execution. It should be mentioned that during his NFL career, kicker Michael Badgley has struggled mightily on kick attempts from at least 40 yards.
Under Dan Campbell, the Detroit Lions have a bright future.
The Detroit Lions enjoyed perhaps their best season ever, and they’re only getting started. This should not be diminished by the loss to the San Francisco 49ers. They advanced to their first NFC Championship game in thirty-two years this season after winning two playoff games in the same postseason for the first time since 1957.
It also helps that they have a player like Penei Sewell, who received a 92.1 overall offensive grade from PFF, ranking him as the best tackle. In 20 games (including the playoffs), the Oregon product gave up just one sack and 25 pressures.
