A jersey worn by Kobe Bryant during his NBA debut with the Los Angeles Lakers has fetched a record-breaking $7 million at a Sotheby’s auction. The jersey dates back to November 3, 1996, when the 18-year-old Bryant became the youngest player to participate in an NBA game. In his brief six-minute debut, he missed his only shot attempt, secured a rebound, and made a block.
This jersey, once sold for just $115,242 in 2012, now stands as the most expensive piece of Kobe Bryant memorabilia ever sold. Its value is rooted in its historical significance, marking the beginning of Bryant’s remarkable 20-year career with the Lakers. This milestone sale also highlights the growing popularity and value of sports memorabilia, especially those associated with iconic athletes like Bryant.
Only three game-worn jerseys have surpassed this $7 million mark. Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” jersey from the 1986 World Cup reached $9.3 million. Michael Jordan’s “Last Dance” jersey sold for $10.1 million. Topping the list is Babe Ruth’s “called shot” jersey, which went for an astonishing $24 million.
Bryant’s jersey was authenticated using photo-matching technology, further verifying its place as a rare and valuable item from NBA history.
Kobe Bryant’s legacy extends far beyond this historic jersey. Over two decades with the Lakers, he captured five NBA championships and two Finals MVPs. Known for his relentless “Mamba Mentality,” Bryant also earned 18 All-Star selections, a regular-season MVP, and scored 33,643 career points—highlighted by his legendary 81-point game in 2006.
Off the court, Bryant made a mark with his Oscar-winning animated short Dear Basketball and his strong support for women’s sports. His influence and inspiration endured until his tragic passing in a helicopter crash in 2020, cementing his place as a sports and cultural icon.
