Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has recently set a challenge for standout rookie Carson Steele, who has quickly become a name to watch in the team’s training camp.
Steele, an undrafted free agent who has impressed many with his performance, has shown significant promise over the past few weeks. After a noteworthy preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he averaged an impressive 7.3 yards per carry and scored his first preseason touchdown, Steele’s rise has been nothing short of remarkable.
Originally seen as a long shot to make the Week 1 roster, Steele’s consistent performance has propelled him into serious contention for a spot on the team. He is now considered a potential candidate for the role of fullback or RB4, a spot initially earmarked for rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit. This rapid ascent has generated considerable buzz among beat reporters, who are increasingly confident about Steele’s chances of making the final roster.
Despite Steele’s impressive early performances, Reid has issued a clear directive to the rookie. In his August 12 comments, Reid emphasized the importance of Steele excelling on special teams. “He’s got to be a good special teams player,” Reid said. “If he’s going to make the team, he’s got to be a good special teams player and he’s got to be able to carry the football and stay aggressive like he’s doing right now.” Reid also noted that Steele had a “productive day” during the preseason opener but acknowledged that the rookie is still in the process of learning the fullback position.
Steele himself seemed fully aware of the expectations set forth by his head coach. Speaking to the media after Reid, Steele expressed his understanding of the challenge ahead. “Honestly, that was kind of my main goal coming into camp,” Steele explained. “My main goal was to try to be like a Swiss army knife. Try to do it all, type of deal. Wherever they need to put me in is where I can get in.” He further elaborated on the importance of versatility, highlighting his willingness to adapt and contribute in various roles, including fullback, despite having limited prior experience in that position.
