**ESPN Report: Cleveland Browns Announce Signing Defensive End After Smith’s Injury**

In a notable roster update from the Cleveland Browns, the team has announced the signing of defensive end Marcus Haynes following a concerning injury to their key player, Za’Darius Smith. Smith, who played a crucial role in the Browns’ defensive lineup last season, was carted off the field on Monday, casting a shadow over the team’s preparations. Fortunately, the injury was later diagnosed as a bone bruise, but it is anticipated that Smith will miss some time, particularly during training camp.

Smith’s injury comes as a significant blow to the Browns, as he was instrumental in transforming their defense into one of the best in the league last year. His absence highlights the need for depth in the defensive line, especially with the team’s preseason game against the Green Bay Packers approaching and defensive end Myles Garrett being gradually eased into practice.

To address this gap, the Browns have signed Marcus Haynes, who was recently on the Broncos’ practice squad. This move is expected to bolster the defensive end position and provide much-needed support during Smith’s recovery period. The signing was confirmed by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on August 6, 2024, and it reflects the Browns’ proactive approach in managing their roster amid the current challenges.

Haynes, an undrafted free agent from Old Dominion, brings a noteworthy track record with him. Although he was waived by the Houston Texans in May due to an injury designation, his previous collegiate performance is impressive. During his four seasons at Old Dominion, Haynes accumulated 102 sacks, 22 tackles for loss, and 15 sacks. This production underscores his potential to contribute meaningfully to the Browns’ defensive efforts.

In addition to the signing of Haynes, it is noteworthy that Smith was not included in the recent trade rumors involving Brandon Aiyuk. His critical role, experience, and new contract make him a key asset for the Browns, further emphasizing the significance of his current injury.

As the Browns navigate this period of uncertainty, the addition of Haynes could prove to be a valuable move, providing depth and versatility to a defensive line that remains a cornerstone of their strategy. With the season drawing nearer, the team will be closely monitoring Smith’s recovery and integrating Haynes into their defensive schemes to ensure they maintain their competitive edge.
