The Cleveland Browns have emerged as a leading candidate in the trade discussions for disgruntled San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

Aiyuk, who has expressed his desire for a trade and a new contract, has reported to training camp but is not participating in practices. Coming off a standout season with 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and 7 touchdowns, Aiyuk is set to make $14.124 million next season as part of his fifth-year option with the 49ers.

Rumors linking Aiyuk to the Browns have circulated for some time, gaining traction from notable figures such as Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. Cabot has suggested the possibility of swapping 30-year-old Amari Cooper, who recently had a Pro Bowl season, for Aiyuk. However, she has also pointed out that such a trade is unlikely. Cam Marino of NFL Draft Buzz has further fueled speculation by naming the Browns and the New England Patriots as the top contenders for Aiyuk’s services. Although Marino is not widely recognized for breaking news, his report has added to the growing buzz.

From a logistical standpoint, a potential trade could involve Cooper along with some draft picks. Aiyuk, being four years younger than Cooper, could be an attractive option for the Browns. However, the Browns face significant challenges with their salary cap situation. Aiyuk’s desire for a substantial new contract, potentially around $30 million per year, would be a financial strain. For context, Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown recently signed a four-year, $120 million deal, averaging just over $30 million annually.

Marino’s report highlights that both the Browns and Patriots are offering more than $30 million for Aiyuk, suggesting that these two teams are the frontrunners in the race. Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers also being mentioned as interested, it appears that the decision will likely come down to the Patriots and the Browns. According to Marino, it is anticipated that Aiyuk will not remain with the 49ers beyond the 2024 season.

As the trade talks continue, the Browns will need to carefully consider their financial flexibility and roster strategy to accommodate Aiyuk’s potential new deal while balancing their other team needs.
