New Mississippi State starting quarterback Blake Shapen appeared in Dallas on Wednesday for the 2024 SEC Media Days. The former Baylor signal-caller is set to lead Jeff Lebby’s high-octane offense this fall, aiming to usher in a new era for Bulldog football.
Expectations are high for Shapen to deliver a productive season in Starkville under Lebby’s guidance. If his performance mirrors the typical output of Lebby’s quarterbacks, Shapen might find his name alongside Mississippi State legend Dak Prescott in the single-season record books. Interestingly, Shapen has trained with the Bulldog great and current Dallas Cowboys star.
“I’ve trained with Dak a couple of times, and it’s really cool being around Dak. He’s a great dude, and anytime you can take information from a guy like that who’s played in a lot of big-time football games in the NFL, it’s pretty special,” Shapen shared. “You talk to Dak, and he’s the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys… but he’s a very normal guy. You can have a conversation with him, and you can tell the moment’s probably never too big for him.”
Shapen’s connection with Prescott comes through their mutual friend, Damien Williams. A former Mississippi State QB and Prescott’s backup, Williams has been Shapen’s personal coach for years, providing a bridge to one of the best to ever wear the Maroon and White.
