Shawn Kemp, former Seattle SuperSonics star, recently confirmed a wild and embarrassing story involving Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird, a notorious trash-talker. As a rookie, Kemp experienced Bird’s legendary confidence firsthand.

On December 13, 1989, Kemp’s team faced the Celtics in Boston. Despite Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish being past their prime, Bird still had immense drive and confidence. Kemp, a hyped rookie selected 17th overall in the 1989 NBA Draft, was thrust into guarding Bird due to a teammate’s knee pain.

During a 2024 appearance on the “All the Smoke” podcast, Kemp recalled, “Before the game, I was looking at Bird, thinking I was going to get him.” Bird, however, had other plans. Kemp mentioned a USA Today article doubting Bird’s abilities, which spurred Bird to make a statement. Bird told Kemp, “Man, it’s going to be a (expletive)-up night for you.”

Bird delivered on his promise, finishing the game with a 40-point triple-double: 40 points, 10 assists, and 11 rebounds. Kemp’s encounter with Bird was a stark welcome-to-the-NBA moment, showcasing Bird’s enduring talent and legendary trash-talking skills.
