West Virginia University men’s basketball coach Darian DeVries has announced the addition of Cavel Witter to his coaching staff as assistant coach/video and scouting coordinator for the Mountaineers. Witter joins WVU after a successful stint at Drake University, where he served as an assistant coach and chief of operations. His tenure at Drake was highlighted by the team’s impressive 28-win season and a berth in the NCAA Tournament, following their Missouri Valley Conference Championship victory.
DeVries, who previously coached Witter during his time at Creighton, expressed enthusiasm about the appointment, citing Witter’s deep understanding of DeVries’ coaching philosophy and his ability to effectively communicate with players. Witter brings a wealth of experience, having also worked at Georgia Southern and Lincoln University of Missouri, contributing to their respective successes in collegiate basketball.
A standout player at Creighton from 2007 to 2010, Witter holds the program record for consecutive free throws made and achieved notable accolades during his playing career, including All-Bench team honors in the MVC. Post-college, he continued his basketball journey professionally in Europe and the G League, earning recognition for his performance in leagues such as Bundesliga and Eurobasket.com.
Witter’s diverse background as both a player and coach positions him well to contribute to WVU’s basketball program as they aim for continued success in the competitive landscape of collegiate basketball.
